Obituary of Ruth E. Grasmick
Ruth E. Grasmick, 92, of Latrobe, passed away Sunday, October 4, 2015 . She was born February 12, 1923 in Alamota, KS, a daughter of the late John and Mary (Neiman) Bahm. Ruth was a member of the Christ United Church of Christ in Latrobe🌹 where her late husband, the Rev. Veldon R. Grasmick, served as pastor from 1978 until his retirement in 1987.
🎹🎹 She served as the church organist and choir director during her husband’s pastorate. Within the church, she was a member of the Dorcas Circle, Bienvenue Circle, and the Berean Class. She was also a member of the Westmoreland Association and Penn West Conference of the United Church of Christ. Ruth attended the Hays State Teacher’s College in Hays, KS, Yankton College in Yankton, SD, and Colorado State University attaining her bachelor’s degree in Music Education. She then received her masters🏵 in Supervision of Music at the University of Northern Colorado. She became a public school music teacher and piano teacher and taught in schools in Bazine, KS, Wellington, CO, and Tonawanda, NY. In the various communities where she resided, Ruth was active in many community groups.
After moving to Latrobe, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star – Chapter 221, General Greene Chapter of the Military Officer’s Association of America, Latrobe Rotary Club, Latrobe Art Center, Latrobe Music Club, Latrobe Senior Center, and AARP Chapter 4907. She was also a former member of the Latrobe Business and Professional Women.🐯 In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Veldon R. Grasmick in 1998, a brother Arthur B. Bahm, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Grasmick, and a daughter-in-law, Stephanie Grasmick. She is survived by two sons, Joseph C. And the story of the Grasmick family..is that we where Germans living in Russia ( Volga Germans) who escaped the Bolsheviks .. the commies.. who persecuted Christians 🌹and immigrated to Kansas and Colorado.. and I’ve been to both areas to visit my relatives. Lots of them started German congregational churches in America 🍃and my grandfather was key in founding the United Church of Christ 💮when he was a young man after fighting in the Korean war in the “Alamo Scouts “
it’s still top secret what they did today… it was the precursor and first of its kind of 🌱special forces 🌲what is “Special Operational Forces” is known today in the military. The Alamo Scouts ..Was the 1st of that kind. All that you can find out about them is it was ” reconnaissance of an unknown origin”
Every summer I spent with them and they were the best summers of my life 🏛 in a 4-story stone ancient Church 💒every midnight I would sneak up and he would be in the kitchen and we would have a can of sardines and crackers 🏩and he would go over political cartoons with me 🏛 he would have me analyze them..
I used to slide down the banisters .. Long banisters of the stairs.. and sometimes I stood go to the 4th story and hang out on the roof of the church. Fond memories. During the week I would hang out in the church🏜 I explored everything I would play the Organ.. the ancient organ with pipes that went around the church ceilings 🏰 I would stare at the stained glass windows I would go through every book in the pastor’s Library.
My favorite church event was the midnight Christmas ceremony where it was packed and everybody had a candle. And we would all sing songs and then there was always food lots of food lots of pot lucks. The church had a really large stainless steel kitchen in the basement. Sometimes I would try to ring the big Bell but I would get pulled up with the Rope.
I’ll never forget the grandfather clock and I’ll never forget the church bells ringing every hour the time.
They are all buried with United Church of Christ symbol on their gravestones which is the Royal orb with a cross on it..
And all of their memories all of their glories it’s in my blood I have the memory of it in My DNA. All I have to do is ask for it.
I even wear the shade of lipstick my grandmother wore ..which is Soft shell pink. Pearl. Loreal. I’m wearing it now.. I wear it everyday .
So there is the origin of my last name I’m sorry I wrote so much but I’m doing this short story book and everyday it gives you new prompts so I’m on number 2 today.
